As an author I am interested in information that objectively looks at sex and threesomes. Surveys are a great way to ask questions, to methodically get information and to report it in consistent way. It gives a snapshot of a population at a particular point in time and it provides an excellent resource for comparison.
A drawback to a survey is a question asked can be influenced by the personal views of the person drafting the questions, people selected may not be representative of the population and generalizations may not always be possible. Meaning, the results reported may not be a true representation of the overall population. Nonetheless this study, in particular, is interesting because the threesome rate for Canadians is higher than Americans and the number of partners Canadian women have, in some instances, exceeds males.

Threesomes and variations 
Speaking as a Canadian female, moving to the USA has ruined a large part of my sex life – perhaps I feel that in retrospect we CNDs aren’t as ‘puritanical’ and a bit more old world European about sex. I certainly have some ideas as to why… might be worth a separate entry on my own. Thanks for this link, I can not wait to read it!
I have lived both in the US & Europe and my experience Americans are ‘puritanical’ about sex. The European attitude about sex, I feel, is more healthy and less restrictive. European attitude towards sex does not create a ‘fairy tale’ or ‘romance novel’ image of sex that, I feel, many Americans hold. It is something I have pondered and question if the difference is due to Europe being more secular or Europe’s stricter regulation of guns.
yes, yes, yes. I think too we need to take into account social medicine, social networks for women and the availability of said support – and how that translate into the younger population : these things are okay, so we talk about them more with our kids.
As an American, I’d readily admit that on the world stage of sex, we’re barely teenagers… and rather chaste ones at that. Then again, we’re good for bad-mouthing alternative sexual practices in public… and doing them behind closed doors and with all the lights out so no one can see our hypocrisy.
We lived in a small mid-west rural state and it was ripe with hypocrisy when it came to alternative sexual practices. At the time gays were shunned and many moved to nearby metropolitan cities. However with truckers going through the area it was well know that practice was alive and well. Likewise threesomes were publicly shunned but privately it was easy to find anyone interested in joining you.
Folks I know who live in the Bible Belt who are active in the lifestyle always fuss about living there – dry counties, parochial views on sex, etc., but they also say that alternative sexual practices – in this case, swinging – is very much alive and well throughout the area and, again, those who bemoan such things in public are doing otherwise privately.
We lived right outside of the Bible-belt and swinging was live and well there. The only thing it was the one thing you never talked about to your family, friends, or co-workers. Some of the smaller towns near us were quite known for their swinging activities and these towns were oddly enough by Hutterite colonies and Mennonite communities. I am not saying there is a direct link but it leave you to wonder.
I live in the Bible Belt and believe me the attitude here is very, very anti sex. I’ve gotten lectures from guys on dating websites because I had checked the “casual sex” button as one of my possibilities and they just couldn’t believe I would do such a thing. Any posts a woman tries to make in the casual encounter section looking for a man on Craigslist gets taken down almost immediately. I’ve encountered some really backwards views from men. The vast majority of people around here are highly conservative Christians and that contributes to a lot of it. After being married to a minister for over a decade I have seen some extremes in that regard. Even when you go downtown here on a Friday night where there are bars there are guys standing on the streets holding up signs saying that women dressing that way are going to Hell and just utter stupidity.
I know what is like. Before I met my wife a date a foreign student who was studying for her masters and was renting a room from a Baptist minister who taught at the Baptist seminary.
We lived just outside of the bible belt in a very conservative area. Women were judged on how they dressed and were viewed negatively if they were sexually active before getting married. Oddly guys were not viewed negatively if they were having sex before getting married. So, I always wondered, who were they having sex with?
Swinging was quite common. It was the one thing, because there was not a lot else to do, a lot of people did but never publicly discussed. It was the one thing you could do that did not cost a lot of money
